Press Statement

 

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the
following statement:

 

Kolkata Floods: Ensure Relief and Rehabilitation

 

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) conveys its
heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed as a result of
electrocution and other accidents consequent to heavy rains in the city of
Kolkata. 

 

The devastating floods across Kolkata city are not just the result of
torrential rains, but of systemic negligence and the deliberate erosion of
public infrastructure by the TMC government which has been prioritizing
profit over people.

 

We strongly condemn the criminal failure of both the Trinamool Congress-led
state government and the BJP-led Centre in addressing Kolkata's worsening
flood vulnerability. The priorities of both the central and state
governments lie elsewhere. Crores are spent on beautification drives and
corporate-driven "smart city" projects, while drains remain clogged, natural
waterbodies filled up, wetlands destroyed, and disaster preparedness is
reduced to token announcements. 

 

While adequate compensation should be immediately paid to the families of
those killed, the Polit Bureau also demands that relief and rehabilitation
measures be taken on a war footing. 

 

The Polit Bureau calls upon all its units in West Bengal to immediately
engage itself in providing relief and rehabilitation to the affected people
with the active intervention of the red volunteers who are well established
in these times of distress.
