I am writing to share that based on a food fortification series

I
reported some time back, to have the story in new and accessible formats,
my colleagues and I have made this small book called '*Our Rice Tastes of
Spring.'*

This is in English. Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar has translated it into Hindi
and we are working on getting a Hindi version out this year, and hopefully
a version in Bangla and other Indian languages too.
I wanted to share this news with you, and I hope you will like it.

**Our Rice Tastes Of Spring**
Monocropping after the Green Revolution and cereal-heavy diets have
depleted soils and affected our nutrition. India is one of the world’s top
food producers. Yet, it faces a chronic undernourishment crisis(16% of its
population is malnourished compared to the global average of 8%). When we
examine the solutions being presented, we must ask, what is their true
meaning for people and the climate?

This small, beautifully illustrated book set in a Adivasi village of
Chotanagpur region of Jharkhand explains the story of erosion of diversity
of our seeds and explores an alternative vision of respecting and valuing
local and diverse seeds and foods. It highlights the importance of precious
heirloom rice varieties, including red, brown, purple, and black rice, and
the stories they carry of our heritage and food cultures.

अतिरिक्त खुदाई से ज़मीन खोखली हो जाती है, और भोजन से भरी हमारी थाली खाली ।
लेकिन पुराने बीजों की यादें बची रह जातीं हैं। हरेक गाँव का कोई न कोई विशेष
किस्म का चावल है।
जैसे एक किसान ने मुझे बता या कि उनके गाँव का चावल बसंत ऋतु की तरह ताज़ा और
सुगंधित है, उसके स्वाद से जैसे मन में बहार है!

मुझे लगा कि गाँव और चावल से जुड़ी इन कहानियों को एकसचित्र किताब का रूप दिया
जाना चाहिये जिसे कि हर कोई — ग्रामीण समुदाय और बच्चें भी — पढ़ सकें और चाव
से पढ़ें।
संध्या विश्वनाथन, अनिरुद्ध मेनन, और कला समूह स्पिटिंग इमेज के अन्य सदस्यों
के सहयोग से इस किताब में प्राण फूँक दिये गये हैं।

मुझे आशा है कि इस किताब के माध्यम से पाठक उस पठार के एक गाँव का जीवन जी
सकेंगे, और यह किताब पाठकों को आमंत्रित करेगी भूले-बिसरे ज्ञान को दोबारा याद
करने के लिये और इस संसार को किसी जादुई ढंग से एक नया रूप देने के लिये।
