Press Release

A three-member delegation of Communist Party of India (Marxist) led by
General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Polit Bureau member Nilotpal Basu and
Central Secretariat member Muralidharan met the full Election Commission and
submitted a memorandum regarding the violence unleashed against the
activists and leaders of opposition parties in Tripura.  

We are herewith releasing the text of the memorandum for publication.

Dear sir,

It is extremely disturbing that in the immediate aftermath of the full team
visit of the Election Commission of India to Tripura, severe violence have
been unleashed against the leaders and activists of the opposition parties
including the CPI(M). It is ironical that these developments take place
after the concrete assurance given by the delegation of the ECI to the
people of Tripura that a violence-free and fair election will be held. The
CEO of Tripura had specifically launched a zero-poll violence mission.
However, the administration, particularly the police administration is
acting as in the past oblivious to the assurances of the ECI. 

The intensity of the attacks and the violence has increased after the
announcement of the polls yesterday. The pattern of violence is clearly
aimed at creating a climate of terror and fear which completely vitiates the
atmosphere for the conduct of free and fair polls. We are attaching herewith
in the annexure the list of recent incidents of violence. 

We are urging you to undertake emergency measures for conducting a free and
fair poll for the state assembly in contrast to what has been happening
during the last five years.

We expect a firm and decisive action on the part of the Election Commission.

Srimanta Dey, 75 years, CPI(M) South Tripura District Secretariat Member. 

While visiting a friend's house, a murderous attack was made on him. He was
hit on head. Now under treatment in G.B. Pantha Hospital, Agartala.

There was a meeting of the CPI(M) at Barpathari. On way back the
participants of the meeting were attacked. They were physically wounded.
Sone had to take treatment in Hospital

An attempt was made to attack him to abort the scheduled meeting at
Barpathari. However, the attempt was aborted.

Attack on CPI(M) meeting 

The meeting of Manik Dey, Ex Minister was attacked by  ruling party
miscreants. The police, however, aborted their attempt

BJP cadres, led by Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, attacked the bike-procession
of Congress party. Shri Chowdhry had a hot altercation with the security
forces, which got viral in the media.

A Tipra Motha activist 

He was murdered by unknown miscreants.

Malaynagar , Sadar West Tripura 

CPI(M) office
